South Park: A Major Bidding War for the Streaming Rights

South Park On Comedy Central

South Park has been a staple of Comedy Central since 1997. It has become an icon and staple, it is still making news in 2019. One of the ways people are watching tv shows are by streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu. There have been several reports coming out in the last couple of days that the South Park creators could be making a lot more money. Matt Stone, Trey Parker, and the media giant Viacom are expected to share between $450 million and $500 million by selling the rights to stream the legendary comedy.

According to Bloomberg.com, there are as much as half a dozen streaming companies are bidding to get exclusive rights to past episodes of the hit show. As of now, fans are able to watch past episodes of South Park on Hulu. Viacom is hoping to secure a new home for South Park by the end of 2019. The feeling is that we might know the winner of the bid by the end of this weekend. Due to the negotiations, the list of companies has not been made public because they fear it will hurt the talks. With how successful streaming services have become, they expect that whoever wins the bidding war will end up paying double what Hulu paid in 2015.

It seems that they are figuring South Park will get the same amount that the hit NBC show The Office got for streaming. Sites like Netflix and Hulu are really changing game. Who would have ever thought in a million years that a show like South Park would get so much attention. People forget that South Park has been on the air since May of 1997. When it comes to sitcoms, only the Simpsons have more air time than South Park.

South Park airs weekly on Comedy Central every Wednesday.
