Spiral: From the Book of Saw- Did We Really Need Another Saw Movie?

Saw movies

When it comes to the horror genre, Saw is relatively new compared to other horror classics. The franchise is loved by some and hated by others. There is no middle ground. It’s either right up your alley or too gore-filled for your liking.

Now that the original franchise has run its course, it looks like the new spin-off is keeping the horror giant going. From 2004 until now, there have been 8 films in the series. Friday’s release Spiral: From the Book of Saw will make the ninth.

Following the Jigsaw Killer, Saw started out as a horror series that showed just how much people can destroy lives including their own. The killer set up traps as punishment for their wrongdoing or to prove to them the value of their life.

From there, the story would hit a downward spiral and they’d try to piece all the movies together. Dragging the initial story out over the series of eight movies made it grow stale and hard to follow. The series would go on a 7-year hiatus after the seventh movie and return in 2017 with Jigsaw.

Four years later, we’re getting what seems to be a spin-off of the franchise. The only problem is, haven’t these movies run their course. Spiral: From the Book of Saw comes out Friday, and to be fair, has a decent cast, but just where can they go to refresh this diluted series?

Does anyone actually remember the original story, how it ended, and if this one will even tie in properly? Will we get something that actually makes us want to come back for more, or will it just be another series of gruesome traps with a watered-down story, so far from the original?

Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the Saw franchise when it first kicked off. When the fourth movie release, I was at the theater watching the marathon until the release. But that is where the line was drawn. Everything after that seemed like the only reason to go was the fact I had already invested. Saw has its place among the horror heavyweights, now it’s time to just accept the fact it’s over.
