Sports: Under current ownership, the New York Mets and New York Knicks have been unsuccessful

New York happens to be home to the largest sports market in the country. It is the only state that where you will see 10 professional sports teams. They are Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres in upstate New York. If you look in the tri-state area, then you will many of your professional teams. You got the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets, New York Mets and New York Yankees, New York Giants and New York Jets, and New York Rangers and New York Islanders.

Many of the professional teams that call the tri-state home have had success. The Yankees have been doing well since 1996. Yes, they died down for a bit, but they have maintained some success. The Giants have won three Super Bowls since 1986 and remain one of the top teams in the NFC. The Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1994 and went on a stretch of dominance for ten years. The Islanders have been on and off but have a very bright future. If you notice, there are two teams that I didn’t mention having success in recent memory. Those teams would be the New York Knicks and New York Mets. While they share the same color scheme uniforms (orange and blue), they also share something else in common. They were both purchased under their current ownership around the same time. The Dolans purchased the Knicks in 2001 and the Wilpons purchased sole ownership of the Mets since 2002. In the almost 20 years of ownership, the Knicks and Mets have made the playoffs a combined seven times.

Let’s first look at the Knicks. Since Dolan family has owned them they have made the playoffs four times. Except for the 2012-2013 season when they made it and lost in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, they have been eliminated after the first round.

On the other hand, the Wilpon family has had sole ownership since 2002. Since then, the Mets have made the playoffs three times. In 2006 they lost in the NLCS. In 2015, they lost the World Series. Finally, they lost the National League Wild Card game in 2016. When you have owners, who are cheap and don’t give a shit about what happens on the field or court, you shouldn’t be shocked that neither team has been successful. I’m not an idiot and know that the Wilpons or Dolans won’t sell the team.

While other teams in the state have gone through slides, it seems that both the New York Knicks and New York Mets have been terrible for years and no bright future in sight.
