Star Wars is Exactly What Disney+ Needed

Disney+

While it has a library of some of the most popular franchises, Disney+ needed a spark going forward. Their streaming platform is just over a year old but their original content was lagging behind the already established streamers like Netflix. With the House of Mouse having all the power in the world when it comes to fan favorites, there was little to entice active monthly subscriptions. They were in a hole where their audience could wait for the show they wanted to watch to finish the release schedule, sign-ups to binge, then cancel.

All of that changed with their most recent round of announcements. While they’ve gone all-in with content from Marvel and Disney, Disney+ is finally getting a Star Wars infused push. We already know that a new series of movies were planned for the future of the franchise, but just the other day they announced 10 new streaming shows for their future. In that announcement they didn’t even include Boba Fett, so for now that’s at least 12.

Here’s where Disney and Star Wars will hit the ground running. Not everyone will be on the Star Wars bandwagon, and not everyone will watch every show they put out. However, there’s a loyal enough fan base that it will allow their monthly subscription to be carried over from the typical one-and-done months. By adding 11 new shows to their lineup, paired with the already running and wildly popular The Mandalorian, and they’ll have a new show each month. Right now they’re running 8 episode seasons, on 12 shows is 96 new episodes a year. While they’ll typically take time off for the holidays, that works itself out to be two new episodes of content a week, and that’s just with their Star Wars content.

Don’t forget, Disney+ will still have their Marvel projects to roll out. The problem with most of their Marvel shows is, they seem like second screen continuations from their already established MCU which crushes at the box office. While the future of the movie industry is up in the air, there’s no shot they take away from that treasure trove should theaters open back up so their Marvel content could be limited series runs.

Which begs the question, how long before they bring back their properties that originally aired on Netflix. Star Wars might be the test market for their new model, but it’s only a matter of time before they bring in their other franchises as well. If they bring back Daredevil, Jessica Jones, or any of the other properties, there’s a good chance they could have enough content to release new episodes every night of the week on their streaming platform.

Disney+ has the market cornered when it comes to fan favorites and Star Wars is just the tip of the iceberg. While they announced a ton of new content coming soon, there’s still a bright future ahead for the streaming service.
