Stargirl: How Will the Team Change In Season 2

Wildcat and Hourman on Stargirl

Unless you subscribe to DC Universe, Stargirl wrapped up it’s season finale tonight. The 13 episode season took us from the death of the JSA to Courtney as Stargirl, to reformation of the JSA, to taking down the ISA. The finale left us with plenty to talk about so let’s dive right into it.

As always if you’re not caught up and don’t want to have it spoiled, stop here.

First and foremost, the takedown of the Injustice Society. The whole season was building up to the final battle. Looking to brainwash the entire world, our heroes would have to infiltrate their underground layer and take out the device that stopped the world, but at what cost?

There seemed to be an even trade-off. Two of our heroes faced life-changing moments in their final fight with the ISA. As Hourman, Rick Tyler finally gets revenge on Solomon Grundy. In his final minutes he beats him to a bloody mess. His revenge would be sweet, but he stopped short of bashing his head in choosing the better path. Rick was hell bent on getting his revenge, caught himself from making the same mistake.

More Stargirl: Stargirl Switching to CW Seems Like A Mistake

But the same cannot be said of Yolanda. Having watched the death of the boy she once loved, faced-to-face with his murder, she did not hold back. Using his own likeness to try an manipulate her, Brainwave would appear before her as his son Henry. Realizing it is an imposter, she slits his throat and watches him bleed out in front of her.

Pay attention come season 2 of Stargirl and beyond. Yolanda has a history of being a distant, hurt, and angry young girl. She’s been broken down to her very core and even at the end distanced herself from a heroes role. While our heroes are all sitting on the bleachers at school, in her final scene we see her sitting alone away from her friends. Will she find her peace or fall prey to the darkness brewing inside her?

Then of course, the ending. After we see Stargirl and S.T.I.P.E enjoying a quite moment of victory, we cut to a scene and a man pulls up to a motel looking for Pat Duggan. The camera pans up and its none other than Sylvester Pembleton, the original Starman who apparently isn’t dead. The perfect cliffhanger to bring the audience back around.

While the first season of Stargirl was a step up from our normal superhero shows, next season it’s been demoted to the CW. Can it keep up the same energy and excitement it had on a streaming service or will a 20+ episode order slow it down? Guess we’ll have to tune in next season to find out.
