This was the XFL: Where to watch the ESPN 30 for 30 online

From 1999 until 2001, the World Wrestling Federation and NBC were owners in the XFL. The XFL was a professional American Football league that was founded by the chairman of the World Wrestling Federation (now known as the WWE) Vince McMahon. This was a small league that consisted of eight teams in two divisions. The intention of the XFL was it was supposed to be a major professional sports league that would run during the NFL’s offseason. However, they were unable to find an audience and would end up closing the doors in 2001.

After the league was done in 2001, it was reported that both the WWE and NBC would end up losing roughly $35 million and only being able to recuperate 30% of their initial investment. One reason why the XFL was not able to find any success was that it was treated more like a WWE event and less like a mainstream sport.

There happened to be several players who would end up going on to either the CFL or the NFL after the XFL was done in 2001. Some of the notable players to come out of the XFL would include Tommy Maddox (Pittsburgh Steelers), Rod Smart or as he was known in the XFL as He Hates Me would end up playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers, Oakland Raiders, and would have a brief run in the CFL for the Edmonton Eskimos, Kelly Herndon ( Seattle Seahawks) and there were others.

Now you are probably asking yourself, “Why is he bringing up the XFL?” I am bringing this up because the XFL will be featured in an upcoming ESPN 30 for 30 that happens to be airing Thursday, February 2nd. This documentary will look at the relationship between Vince McMahon of the WWE and Dick Ebersol of NBC, as through the eyes of Dick’s son Charlie Ebersol, who directed the film. This will be on TV leading up to Super Bowl LI on Sunday night between the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots.
