Streaming: Hidden Gems You Might Not Be Watching
Streaming is becoming a lot like network television as of late. Our parents used to say “I pay for all these channels but can never find anything to watch.” Between the reruns of shows you’ve already watched, and starting new ones that don’t immediately grab your attention, finding new shows can be tough. If you’re looking for a few shows that aren’t what everyone is talking about but are interesting enough to keep your attention, try these hidden gems:
Acapulco – Apple TV+
Imagine How I Met Your Mother as a bilingual show, set at a Mexican resort, in the 80s. That’s a pretty generic understanding of Acapulco on Apple TV+. It doesn’t have the fanfare of the rest of the Apple shows, but it is one of their most underrated streaming offerings. It might not offer the full-belly laughs as some of the more well-known sitcoms but it more than makes up for it with charm and likability. The characters are relatable and easily approached. It might not be a deep thinker like House of the Dragon, but if you need a lighthearted sitcom, start with Acapulco.
This Fool – Hulu
(From Hulu) “Julio works at Hugs Not Thugs, a gang rehabilitation non-profit, where he butts heads with his older cousin Luis, an ex-gang member who just got out of prison and moved in with Julio and his family”. A situational comedy about dealing with the ups and downs of your family from a lens that’s easily understandable and relatable. If you need a good comedy that is a little over the top but nothing too extraordinary, this one is for you.

Peacemaker – HBO Max
Unless you’re really into superheroes or the DC universe, this one might have flown under your radar. WB/DC gave James Gunn the green light to continue The Suicide Squad character Peacemaker, played by John Cena. You can gripe and moan about Cena as an actor all you want, but if you’re someone suffering from “superhero fatigue” this one really breaks up the streaming burnout. It’s not your typical superhero show, and Peacemaker is anything but a hero. It’s not a series you can watch with the kids that’s for sure, but it’s hero-adjacent with some very funny scenes.
Severance – Apple TV+
Two out of the four underrated shows come from Apple. There’s plenty of quality content with a smaller catalog for their streaming service. If you’ve ever wanted to find a show where you won’t see things coming a mile away, try Severance. There’s a good chance you might not even figure out what the show is actually about. But that’s the appeal, it’s such a strange and challenging show that it’s going to keep you guessing. As weird as that may sound, it’s the intrigue that gets to you. It’s such a strange and unusual concept that it makes you want to watch more. The general idea is what if there was a procedure to separate your work memories from your personal memories? From there you’ll be left guessing what is up with the company that came up with this procedure, why would anyone want this done, and what is the ultimate endgame.
There are plenty of streaming options these days. When you don’t have the time to weed through all of them, come back for more hidden gems and tv shows you should be watching.
