Ted Lasso: How A Spin-off Could Work

Ted Lasso's Roy Kent

Everyone that loves the hit show Ted Lasso is disappointed it is coming to an end. Fans have been begging for another season but the cast and crew swear it was written always written as a 3-season show. Despite that fact, there is enough brilliant writing and a tremendous fan following that there is an easy opportunity to continue with a spin-off even if Ted Lasso does end after season 3.

*Disclaimer: There are still 3 episodes left so none of this reflects the final episodes, nor is there prior knowledge of how it ends or any affiliation to the show itself.*

Season 3 has done the best job of laying the groundwork for how the show continues even if without the main character Ted Lasso. The show has put more focus on some fan favorites. Some of the stars of Ted Lasso will go on to do other major projects, but with a full ensemble cast so much of the story can go on. Imagine the show:

We Are Richmond (or something along those lines)

While the show has centered around Ted and his Tedisms full of dad jokes and one-liners, we’ve really grown to love the team as a whole. They’ve brought Roy into the fold as a coach and he’s embraced his role as a leader. If the show does move on from Ted, Roy has moved up the ranks and continued his role as the authority in the locker room. He even stepped in front of the camera to make a rare press conference appearance, one that mirrored Ted’s to start season 2 after Earl met an unfortunate accident. Replacing Ted with Roy wouldn’t change the dynamic of the show as he has quickly become a fan favorite.

More Ted Lasso: Will Ted and Rebecca End Up Together?

But what about Rebecca? Despite what the shippers and anti-shippers will say, no one knows how the show will end. Even if there’s a clean break with Rebecca’s story, there’s still a chance for the show to go on without her as well. Season 3 also set up a unique way for Rebecca to sell the team. Rupert has shown time and time again his inability to be faithful to anything that’s not a futbol club. We see a bit of a divide between him and Bex in the episode where everyone is wooing Zava. A spin-off could easily hit the reset button and have “old Rebecca” sell Richmond to “new Rebecca” for the same reason. Only now, Bex’s revenge isn’t ruining his futbol club, it’s making it better than his own.

The Plot?

Richmond struggles to adjust to new ownership while team rivals make their moves against the team. Westham threw enough money at Zava to pull him out of retirement becoming a major rival to Jamie Tarrt. With no love lost for Richmond, Edwin Akufo establishes himself as another major rival with his new team. Roy struggles with his new role as coach but coach Beard and Higgins try to ease him in.

Some of the background characters could step into new roles. The new show could easily bring back supporting roles like Colin, Isaac, Zoreaux, Will, Bumbercatch, anyone from the pub, and so many more. Without question, even if season 3 is the last for Ted Lasso, there’s plenty of room for the show to go on with a whole new look. Would fans accept it? We’ll never know unless they try.
