Ted Lasso: Player Profiles Pt 2 – Roy Kent

Apple TV+'s Roy Kent of Ted Lasso

When it comes to Ted Lasso, there is no better complimentary character to Ted than the team captain, Roy Kent. Ted is the soft people-pleasure while Roy is more abrasive and standoffish. From player to coach, Roy Kent is the heart and soul of the team.

Strengths:

He’s here, he’s there, he’s every-f–kin-where. He’s Roy Kent and the Roy Kent is in full effect. When it comes to being exactly what the team needs, he’s the guy. He’ll chase down the opponents on a big play. He’ll be the fire under someone’s backside when they’re underperforming. He might curse like a sailor, but he’s the leader that balances out the lightheartedness of Ted. One is a gentile hand, the other a swift kick in the backside. His experience in the game brings out the best of his teammates and sets the tone for the entire club.

Weaknesses:

On the field, his age slows him down. Off the field, walls so high keep anyone from getting close. He’s a big teddy bear one moment, and a grizzly bear the next. His favorite word starts with ‘F’ and he uses it frequently. Despite his anger and aggression, he can be one of the most thoughtful people. When Roy Kent talks people are forced to listen. Too bad you’re not always going to get what you want to hear and that will turn some people off. Unfortunately, it’s usually what needs to be said. You’ll either love him or you’ll hate him, but he’s as real as they come.

The Verdict:

Every team could use a Roy Kent. Ted Lasso, at the core of the show, takes people of all backgrounds and personalities and rolls them into one big ball of dad-like humor. Every friend group has the Roy Kent who doesn’t always say the right things, but someone still says the necessary ones. Roy may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s better than being dehydrated, so you’ll drink anyway. There might be more to Roy Kent than meets the eye, but you’ll have to break that tough outer shell to get to it.
