Ted Lasso: What’s the Plan For Roy Kent?

Ted Lasso and Roy

Ted Lasso is wrapping up its first season for Apple TV+. The 10-episode first season will wrap up on Friday with the season finale. With so many s 1 exploring the team dynamic, they’ve done a great job of tying up loose ends to close out the season. While some questions have been answered, more have come up. Going into season 2 the biggest hanging question revolves around Roy Kent.

“Small-time football coach Ted Lasso is hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer.”

Towards the end of season 1, the show has been exploring the slow decline of their team captain. Roy has been the leader of the team with both his voice and his play. Now, however, his play is declining and it’s time to transition to the younger players.

The major issue Ted Lasso is exploring is what happens to Roy post-football life. Being one of the main characters in the forefront, he’s involved with multiple storylines. First his love interest in Keeley, how long can they keep that afloat since she’d still be actively involved with the club where Roy wouldn’t? Would we lose two main characters or would they find a way to keep him involved? Could he transition to coach or fall back to the second team and be a role player?

Then of course, he’s found a close connection to Ted himself. There’s a good chance the mutual respect earns him a leadership role off the field. The minor issue with that is, we’ve already got a closed off disconnected coach in Coach Beard. How would that dynamic work? There’s no saying he’d take a coach role with the team but how else could they keep him in the picture?

Roy has been one of the more relatable characters on the show. He’s not stereotypical past-his-prime player who just doesn’t know when to walk away. He’s got the seasoned veteran vibe down and has the respect of the team. What would really shake things up either in the finale of Ted Lasso or early into next season, if Ted was promoted and Roy would slide into his role.

His lack of knowledge and more control would lead to a much funnier challenge for both the two. Both Ted and Roy have earned the respect of the team and the rest of the organization. The power struggle between the two would be absolutely hysterical despite their mutual respect of each other.

The entire first season of Ted Lasso can be binged on Apple TV+ on Friday Oct. 2.
