Ted Lasso: Why Jamie Tartt Embodies What The Show Is Really About

Jamie Tartt played by Phil Dunster on Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso might be the heart of the show, and Roy and Rebecca might be fan favorites, but Jamie Tartt is a prime example of what Ted Lasso is all about. Not only is he one of the best-developed characters in the show.

Strip away all the speeches and lessons the show has taught us, and Jamie is still fantastic. Any show that can write a great character you hate in the beginning and love by the end is a prime example of character development. Jamie went from being the thorn in everyone’s side to the leader he was always destined to be. He went from cocky to caring. His character is one of the top redemption arcs of the show

Be Curious, Not Judgemental

One of Ted Lasso’s biggest moments came in season 1 with a memorable quote credited to Walt Whitman, “Be Curious, not judgemental” from the episode “The Diamond Dogs” in the famous bar scene. At the time, viewers have been led down the path of Ted being a loveable goofball with a heart of gold and full of dad jokes. However, at this moment the show reminds us that people aren’t always what we’ve seen. Knowing what we know now as the series looks to be coming to an end, the same can be applied to now fan favorite Jamie Tartt.

While you might have caught yourself singing along to Jamie Tartt to the tune of Baby Shark, most viewers weren’t a fan of Jamie’s in the early episodes of Ted Lasso. He was cocky, arrogant, and kind of a prick. However, the more we learned about Jamie and the more layers the show peeled back, the more everyone began to soften their stance. Opening viewers’ eyes to everything he’s been through, the ups and the downs, and learning why he is the way he is we started to forgive him a little.

His relationship with Roy only furthered everyone’s love for Jamie. At the beginning of the show, the two were rivals. Their rivalry almost tore the team apart. It wasn’t until Roy saw Jamie’s struggles with his father and not having that person to look up to that even his cold heart started to melt. Roy steps in to be the mentor that Jamie always looked up to. Their friendship grew because Roy let go of his judgemental attitude towards Jamie.

Imagine if Ted Lasso never gave us Jamie’s backstory. If by the end of the show, the entire audience would’ve been judgemental and never got to know one of their favorite characters by the end. There would never be the heartwarming moments between him and Roy, or Keeley, or Ted. We would’ve gone on pre-judging never curious as to why he is the way that he is. We would’ve gone on hating on such a great character who really was a victim of his past.

Imagine all the things we’d miss out on if we gave up on things after our first impression.  Ted Lasso taught us the saying “Be curious, not judgemental” but Jamie’s character hammers that point home. Much like Ted’s speech in season 3 in the episode “Mom City”, viewers should be glad they gave Jamie a second chance. He went from an antagonist in season 1 to a hero by the show’s end and that’s what Ted Lasso is all about.
