Ted Lasso: Will Ted And Rebecca End Up Together?

Ted Lasso Christmas Episode

Despite there not being a release date yet for Ted Lasso, we’ve got some questions going into season 3. Last season we saw a wedge driven between Keeley and Roy and Jamie try to reenter the picture. Nate left to work for Rebecca’s husband as his coach. The whole entire team when through therapy and came out the other side. But the one thing that’s been teased throughout both seasons, is the relationship between Ted and Rebecca.

From the very beginning, what started as a plot on her ex-husband has evolved into at least mutual respect. What once was the boss/employee relationship has grown into a two-way street of friendship. But what looks like a causal connection between two adults, could be hinting at something more along the way. Let’s not forget that Ted and Rebecca share similar stories and struggles.

First, let’s take you all the way back to season 1 where their divorces were on center stage. Both were in relationships that challenged who they were as people. Ted and his wife were in different places because his overly exhausting positivity was a challenge to deal with. Rebecca’s husband left her as the strong independent woman, for a younger woman he seems to have more control over. Between the two of them, Ted would never give up that positive demeanor because of how he builds relationships with the people around him. Rebecca was never going to be the pushover who just fell into line to a narcissistic control freak. In both instances, their failed relationship shook them to their core. In doing so, it built a bond between the two in a way they both understood each other’s pain.

Then of course there’s the dating app fiasco. Season 2 leads you down this path, deliberately teasing Ted and Rebecca messaging each other on Keeley’s Bantr app. Even though we eventually find out it was Sam that Rebecca had a connection with, the writers laid it on pretty thick. The relationship between Sam and Rebecca is exactly the misdirect they want you to follow so if she and Ted eventually develop it has that “about time” level of wholesomeness.

Even though the two have never shown the slightest resemblance in each other than their mutual respect, that doesn’t mean there haven’t been seeds along the way. Remember when Ted hooked up with Sassy back in season 1? One of the first things he questioned was whether or not he should tell Rebecca. When Ted was white-knighting (as he called it) at the bar playing darts, the look she gives him inches in her own regrets. She sees in him the same pain she’s struggled through.

Finally, there’s the key tipping point towards the end of season 2. When Rebecca’s father died we get the perfect side by side of how alike these two actually are. The love they have for a parent that betrayed them. The burden of the hurt they carried all these years because of it. They both hold onto the resentment that has shaped every relationship they’ve formed over the years. When their two worlds collide we could see something bigger than the story we’ve got so far.

When she reveals her massive plan to sink the club and that his hiring was a farce, Ted forgives her. Her immediate response was shock with a “What? Why?” to which they shared their pain over their mutual divorces. Ted Lasso is a show built on relationships and struggles. While each scenario is just an example of strengthened respect for each other, it also builds a connection between the two. There’s something more than a casual boss/employee relationship between the two, but how far will the Ted Lasso writers go to connect the two?
