Tennessee Titans: It’s Time To Grab DeSean Jackson At Trade Deadline
The Tennessee Titans have been in search of a playmaker for quite some time now. In their hearts, they still believe that Marcus Mariota is their QB and if so, then he needs someone to throw to. The Titans are ranked at the bottom of several passing categories (Attempts, Yards, and TDs). Something has to give. With the recent news that DeSean Jackson wants out of Tampa Bay, this is the perfect time to put a package together.
Jackson is not the receiver he once was while with the Philadelphia Eagles. His time with the Washington Redskins were forgetful and while he has put up somewhat solid numbers in Tampa Bay, he’s not the right fit for that team. He wants out, and the Titans should take a flyer.
Siting at 3-4 on the season, the Tennessee Titans are still in the AFC South division race right behind the 5-3 Houston Texans. But that poses another dilemma. With Will Fuller out for the rest of the year, the Texans may turn their attention to DeSean Jackson as well.
After making the playoffs last season, many expected the Titans to come out the gate swinging in 2018. But no such luck. Their inability to stretch the field has left their QBs looking about as dangerous as Johnny Manziel. But that can all change with one bold move.
Adding Jackson will give the Titans the deep threat they’ve been craving. Despite the heavy criticism that Mariota has taken over his career, he’s a pretty accurate passer (66 percent) than some of the QBs placed above him. The issue with the Titans’ offense is that it’s so elementary. Instead of using the run to set up play action passes, Mariota is forced to dink and dunk his way to first downs.
Case in point. On the year, in five games, Mariota has completed just 99 passes for 1030 yards, three touchdowns, and five interceptions. If that’s not enough to get Jackson in Tennessee then what about the 6.9 Yards Per Attempt. For his career, Jackson has averaged 17.5 yards per catch and that’s including his NFL leading 22.9 this season. Even at 32 years old, he still has it.
Not only would Jackson’s addition give Mariota extra life, it would also do wonders for Corey Davis on the opposte side. Davis has the hands, but when your QB and offense is being run on the precautionary side, you’re handcuffed. With Jackson onboard, that will open the offense up more, thus resulting in bigger opportunities for Davis to excel.
It’s a win for everyone. Jackson gets his escape from whatever is going on in Tampa Bay with their QB situation and the Tennessee Titans get the playmaker in hopes he could help them catch the Texans.
