The Batman: Is It Time For DC to Have A Bond Type Role?

When DC cast Robert Pattinson as Batman in Matt Reeve’s upcoming The Batman movie, they decided to hit the reset button on the Caped Crusader. Going with a younger role lets them tell the story of the earlier days of Gotham’s favorite vigilante. Instead of doing a true prequel to Batman-like they did with the tv show Gotham, Reeves is taking a different approach to the origin story. Now that they’ve gone with a younger iteration, should they explore more of a James Bond role with their storytelling instead of recasting every 2-3 movies?

When you think of James Bond, you don’t have a handful of actors that have played him in a short window. Sean Connery played him off and on, mostly in the early 60s, then again in 1971 and 1983. Roger Moore played Bond for 13 years. Timothy Dalton for 8. Pierce Brosnan portrayed him for a decade. Even the current Bond, Daniel Craig, has been on a 16-year stint as the world’s most famous spy.

More Movies: The DC Universe Needs a Batman Beyond Series

Of course, movie making is different than it was all those years ago. With special effects and CGI, you won’t be pumping out a movie every year or every couple of years. These days it takes 4-5 years. However, at just 35 years old Robert Pattinson can play Bruce Wayne/Batman for a very long time. If he can go ut and nail the role, DC and Warner Bros. can do something they never have before and tell a comic book accurate Batman story.

DC has stuck with a loose interpretation of the character since putting him on the big screen. They’ve always toyed with the idea of getting deeper into the Bat-family but have never fully committed. With a young actor who is starting in the early days of the story, we can see Bruce evolve on screen. We can see his story unfold with Selina Kyle/Catwoman. They’d even be able to start from Dick Greyson’s Robin all the way to Damien Wayne.

It’s time for Warner Bros. to stop holding onto the cards with their beloved Batman characters. The time to show their hand is here. They’re getting crushed by the MCU right now and they’ve barely scratched the surface of their mainstream characters and best stories from the comics. The only time we get decent comic book adaptations is in their animated films. It’s time to push them all in and developing a long-lasting attachment to Bruce Wayne/Batman and a younger Robert Pattinson gives them that chance.
