The Batman: Robert Pattinson as Batman Isn’t That Bad
Remember back before the times of Rotten Tomatoes. Back when you used to wait and see before social media shot down all your expectations of a film and casting. Sure, there was magazines and newspaper articles to voice their opinions, but nothing as vile as social media. The latest fits in overreaction is Robert Pattinson cast as Batman. Before there’s even a trailer, fans are jumping at a chance to create a petition to persuade the studio to change their minds. But it’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
Remember Heath Ledgers roles before The Dark Knight? 10 Things I Hate About You, Brokeback Mountain, A Knight’s Tale, hell even The Patriot were all pretty boy roles that lead up to one of the best performances of the Joker if not the best in most fans and critics eyes.
Aaron Elkhart turned out to be a great Two-Face but not before starring in a romance film No Reservations with Catherine Zeta-Jones.
And don’t remind people how much they knew Michael Keaton would suck as Bruce Wayne. I mean a comedic actor playing the tentpole character in the DC worlds. That was the worst mistake in the history of movies, right? Better hope they don’t make a mistake of that caliber again.
Then, of course, there’s the George Clooneys and Val Kilmers. Well, respected actors who should’ve been the perfect fit for Bruce/Batman. As it turns out, they neither pulled off the Bruce Wayne aspect or Batman well enough to make the movies re-watchable.
Every casting has been met with its criticisms but let’s face it. If not for the teenie and tweenie Twilight franchise Pattinson was a lead role in, fanboys wouldn’t be throwing such a fit. Even though those movies would go on to spawn millions of dollars at the box office, they were geared mostly towards a female audience and DC fanboys can’t stand it. Forget that Matt Reeves supposedly politicked for the casting, or the fact casting in the past has teetered both ways and that Robert Pattinson has shown off some acting chops since then.
No sign the overreacting petition from DC fans to try and prevent Robert Pattinson from playing Batman. Ya know because the fans have been so right in the past. Not every casting is going to be perfect but in the same breath, not everyone will be a flop. Yes, DC has had their missteps in the past, but they seem to be coming around. Can we at least get to footage from the movie before we throw our fits?
