The Batman: What We’d Love To See Out Of A Sequel

The Batman production still

Now that it’s been out for two full weekends, can we talk about The Batman? Those of us who have seen it can tag along, but anyone who is waiting for it to air on HBO Max should stop and come back. For the most part, people agree that this one was a success and was different from anything we’ve seen so far. After a strong showing at the box office, Matt Reeves proves that superhero fatigue is for the weak.

** Potential Spoilers Ahead**

The Batman was the reboot this franchise needed. We’ve seen the same old Batman story washed, rinsed, and repeated multiple times with multiple leads. Robert Pattinson was believable as Bruce Wayne and the story between him and Selina Kyle came off natural and has a bright future ahead with the right storytelling. Now there’s talks of The Batman getting a sequel and here’s what should happen in the sequel:

No Joker, Yet

Though The Batman teased the Joker character, we don’t need the current iteration to have one. As a matter of fact, if the universe does go ahead with the Joker character it should be in one of the HBO Max series. We’ve seen enough of the character to saturate the movies. There are plenty of characters who need their time. He might be the most villainous of the bunch but The Batman needs to create a different approach to some of these villains the same way they did with the Riddler.

With That Being Said

Can we get Matt Reeves’ version of Victor Fries? After setting up the relationship between the Bat and the Cat this would be a great plot point for a sequel. As Mr. Freeze tries to save his wife from her incurable condition,  he turns to less than legal means. Bruce sees the desperation in him and tries to intervene leading to catastrophe. Blaming Batman for the setbacks, Freeze stumbles upon his relationship with Catwoman and chooses her as his payback knowing he could never get to Batman. The twist is, she relates to Freeze because he too has a love he can’t have. In the end it all leads to the showdown between Batman trying to save Selina while simultaneously trying to save their connection.

Deep cuts

DC needs to start establishing their off-brand characters. It’s time to dive into the vault and see Kite Man on screen. As we’ve seen these movies be more cerebral, why not add the Ventriloquist? Not every villain needs to be readily available to fight Batman. Why can’t we add to the atmosphere of Gotham by adding scenes with these characters that aren’t part of the central plot. Yes, Spider-man 3 all those years ago proved too many villains make it tough but no one is saying make them a focus. Just acknowledge they exist. Since they’re so big on the HBO Max shows, why not introduce them to make them part of the shows people tune in for.

A Different Tone

While we’re on the subject of other villains, why not add a completely different tone altogether. What if they bring in Scarecrow and his fear toxin and make The Batman sequel more of a horror story? Take the fear toxin and tie it into the HBO Max show they’re working on about Arkham Asylum where the show sets up the next movie. They can introduce us to Gotham’s more cynical villains and then after an encounter with the Scarecrow, Batman’s fear becomes all too real that all these villains escape at the same time. Make it a dark, twisted, horror take on the Batman rather than just keep repeating the same formula.

Batman is one of the most beloved heroes in the DC universe. There are so many options to run with, its a shame we keep getting the same story over and over again.
