The Bear Needs To Stay Away From The Carmy/Sydney Relationship
Hulu needs to take a cue from Apple TV+ and their show Platonic in regards to the main characters of their hit show The Bear. While Carmy and Syndey have a complicated relationship on the show, it shouldn’t go much past their mutual respect. There’s already fan speculation of a love interest between the two but it just wouldn’t be a good fit for the future of the show.
First and foremost, Claire should be the driving force between Carmy’s struggles and everything coming together. Their relationship has been set up with more history between the two. A Sydney and Carmy relationship doesn’t make sense whether it’s in the early stages of the show or later seasons. They’ve already laid the groundwork for Carmy to try and juggle the balance between his work and his personal life. Why can’t we just have the mentor/mentee role that they’ve already set up? Wouldn’t a story where he loses his girl, his top chef and partner, and potentially the restaurant be way more satisfying if he overcame his own personal demons to save them all?
More Entertainment: Can Platonic Fit Into Apple TV+’s Slate?
What purpose would a Syndey and Carmy relationship serve? They’ve already told his story of being one of the top-skilled chefs. A plot point of we make each other better wouldn’t cheapen his story. The reason he doesn’t succeed isn’t because of his skill, it’s his own personal demons that are chasing him. He’s never going to be better than he is. But what he can do is make Sydney better.
The Bear could pull off a rare instance where a love interest can 100% support our main character. Why does there have to be a love interest or a love triangle here? What if Sydney can’t take any more of Carmy’s episodes and leaves? He spirals and starts to lose control. Who would be disappointed if Claire was the one to make Carmy realize how much Sydney as a chef keeps him grounded and pushing to achieve his dreams? Why can’t their whole world be intertwined and tell a story of his struggles and all the pieces come together? What if Carmy starts going off the rails the same way his brother did and it becomes a story of support around him with his girl, his friends, and those who prop him up every day rather than just another love triangle story?
Would we be disappointed if Carmy and Sydney end up together? No, but The Bear has a lot going for it and could easily build. more than just your typical drama tropes. Should it get picked up for future seasons, there are plenty of stories to build on. A Carmy and Sydney ship shouldn’t be one of them.
