The Chi: Kevin Should Encounter No More Pain

The Chi

Season 3 of The Chi has gotten off to an explosive start. With the death of Brandon, the storyline has shifted to other central characters. One, in particular, has been the growth of young Kevin. In the first two seasons, Kevin was still looking for his way in the neighborhood, friendships, relationships, and his own home. But now, his voice and presence is a little stronger.

At the end of Episode 2 of the third season, the screen went black with a man holding a gun to Kevin’s head. What does that mean for his character going forward? We know that the writers are not going to kill Kevin off as we can see in the Season 3 promo shot that his storyline is not finished.

But having a gun to his head means that Kevin is in danger, again. It’s time for the writers of The Chi to recognize that this young man has been through enough heartache and it’s time to cut him some slack.

Kevin has plenty of spunk and a heart of gold. But we can see early on that the writers are trying their best to take all of that away from Kevin. If there was one character who should walk away with a happy ending, it’s Kevin.

In the first season, he dealt with the weight of being the eye witness to Coogie’s murder. He tried his best to keep it a secret but that heart of gold took over. He then lost his father, although they weren’t close, it was still a huge loss. His friendship with Jake was often tested in the first two seasons. His relationship with his sister Keisha is rocky at best and his home life often has Kevin in hot water with his mom.

Then the death of Brandon sent him deeper into his feelings of pain. Brandon was either viewed as a big brother or father figure for him. So, that loss is a painful one. Kevin, despite being quiet, has also felt the pain of losing love. While he had tried to hide his feelings for Maisha, the audience knew he did have some for her. In Season 2, he messed that up by trying to be cool around his friends.

Now comes the trauma of not being able to find his sister after she vanished in the Season 3 premiere. In those same Season 3 promo spots, we see Keisha running through the streets of Chicago but we also see cops at a crime scene where it appears that a body was found. What if Keisha is dead? what effect will that have on Kevin moving forward?

Are the writers for The Chi that bold to do that to their young star? Will that add extra heartache on a character so young?
