The Cleveland Cavaliers Need To Start Negotiating With Cedi Osman ASAP

Koby Altman must sign Cedi Osman to a contract extension. It’s imperative the Cleveland Cavaliers keep him beyond the 2020 season. If not, the team takes a giant step backward. What’s the plan for Osman going forward?

It must be stated, Cedi Osman is a restricted free agent in 2020. He’s allowed to sign with any team, however, the Cavs have the right to match. In theory, signing Osman to an extension might not be necessary if they’re willing to match any offer given to him.

With that being said, Cedi Osman had a fantastic campaign in 2018-19. His averages of 13 PPG and 4.7 RPG are career highs. He attempted 4.9 three-pointers a game The best part of it all? He’s only 23. It’s Osman’s age which has many intrigued about his potential in the NBA. And possibly driving the price of a contract up.

Considering the 2018-19 season was his first full year, there’s a lot of optimism around Cedi. It’s best if the Cavs start contract negotiations now.

When Osman improves upon his numbers in his third year, the price of a new deal will skyrocket. This would leave the Cavaliers paying a lot more than they need to. If Altman and Dan Gilbert sign Osman to a new deal this year, they can sign him to their own terms, avoiding any issues they might face by trying to match another team’s deal.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have groomed Osman. They acquired his rights from Minnesota on Draft night, and have let him develop at their own pace. He played behind LeBron James, learning basketball from the NBA’s All-Time Greatest player. It’s worth it to the Cleveland franchise that they see through Osman’s career and get a big return on investment.

Altman and Gilbert aren’t dumb when it comes to making the right decisions for the Cleveland Cavaliers. It’s in the best interest of the team to re-sign Cedi Osman. Whether that comes via an extension before 2020, or restricted free agency, he’ll remain a Cavalier. It’s just in the team’s best interest to sign him before the 2020 free agency push.
