The Darkest Minds Trailer – Cavemen Radio Show

There’s a lot up in the air with Disney’s acquisition of Fox and it’s properties. While the sale has hit some snags along the way, been countered, voted on and approved, and now another block attempt supposedly this time in-house. People are beginning to wonder about the future of the studio. That’s not holding them back from releasing movies by any means and The Darkest Minds is soon approaching.

The first thing that comes to mind with their trailer is how much it looks like a scaled down X-men film. While there are people with powers, none seem to have anything other than a human form. This isn’t the first time movies have ventured into characters with abilities without calling it a superhero film. In 2011 Dreamworks tried to tap into the genre with I Am Number Four, and while it did well enough at the box office it left critics confused and feeling like they missed the plot. Is The Darkest Minds another attempt to capitalize on the superhero genre without calling it a superhero flick?

From IMDb.com

“Imprisoned by an adult world that now fears everyone under 18, a group of teens form a resistance group to fight back and reclaim control of their future.”

Officially dubbed a sci-fi/thriller, it’s hard to not see the similarities between this and a young X-men film. Even with next year’s New Mutants film with essentially the same storyline. Fox has struggled to put together a strong string of movies as of late and could be the reason leading to the sale of properties so it’s safe to assume they’d go with what they have done well throughout multiple projects. Two of Fox’s stronger properties have been X-Men and Deadpool, but they’ve had longtime comic book followers to prop up their subpar plots.

Not to take anything away from The Darkest Minds as the trailer makes a good attempt at interesting enough to see. However, it appears the studio has been phoning it in when it comes to movies knowing a sale was on the horizon. Originality is the key to long-term success. Hopefully, The Darkest Minds was given the writers it deserves to be a standout success, otherwise, this has studio mismanagement written all over it.
