The Dolphins Cutting Josh Rosen Was the Right Move
Sorry Miami Dolphins fans, but Josh Rosen had to go. Maybe he will develop into the kind of player he was drafted as. Maybe he’ll be the next characterized as a bust. He may land somewhere in the middle taking the Ryan Fitzpatrick route as a journeyman QB. Whatever the case may be, his time in Miami needed to come to an end.
First, he more than likely was brought in as Fitzpatrick insurance in case he decided to retire after last season. Miami knew they were in a prime position to get a quarterback in this year’s draft. Even if they weren’t “tanking for Tua” this draft class was deep enough for the Dolphins to land any of the quarterbacks in the top 15 picks. They weren’t going to be better than half the league with a new HC, new regime, new culture, and limited talent.
More Dolphins: Fitzpatrick Should Be Welcomed Back
Miami more than likely took a shot on a young kid, who had some upside, that they hoped they could develop and play so they took a shot. It didn’t work. If a 36-year old Fitzpatrick didn’t return to the team, Miami would again have to throw the rookie to the wolves or see if Rosen was going to make a leap forward.
Second, Miami never had it in their plans to keep Rosen. The minute they drafted a quarterback knowing Ryan Fitzpatrick was going to come back, his days were numbered. Even if he’s improving unless he’s leaps and bounds better than Fitzpatrick he wasn’t sticking around. Guess what, he wasn’t better than Fitzpatrick so the Dolphins moved on.
“But they wasted a pick and money.” They sure did but they had picks and money to spare and they used them. Next draft, they’ll have picks and money to spare. Taking a gamble on trading for another team’s player is no worse than taking a gamble on a rookie draftee. Maybe they would’ve found that one player that made an impact or maybe Rosen would’ve developed. We can play the what-if game all we want, but the truth of the matter is, they felt comfortable moving on.
Given that they have a veteran quarterback familiar with the system, and their hopeful franchise quarterback in the wings fans should be just as comfortable moving on. Maybe Josh Rosen develops into something worthy of a top 10 pick, but it’s clear it wasn’t going to be as a member of the Miami Dolphins.
