When it comes to DC movies, we’ve had some good, a lot of okay, and ones that were flat-out terrible. James Gunn and Peter Safran promise a DCU with continuity, passion, and salute the fans. It sounds good in interviews, but will it show up on game day? They’ve stated it starts with bringing Shazam into the new DCU but the real kickoff starts with The Flash:

After being disappointed in the exit of Henry Cavill from the DC universe and Ezra Miller’s personal struggles, fans are skeptical, and rightfully so. James Gunn and Co need to come out with a strong “first” showing. The Flash is supposed to be the movie that resets the DCEU and transitions to the new DCU. From the trailer alone, this movie looks like the perfect transition.

Ezra Miller has already left his mark on the role, bringing lighthearted humor to the previous movies. As many fans often complained about how “dark” the previous movies were, The Flash brings a bit of humor, and judging by the trailer has a ton of emotion. They’ll need it as most critics of these movies have often complained about the disconnect with the characters on screen.

There’s a lot riding on this movie and it looks like it hits all the right notes so far. We get the emotion of the Flash’s story, we get the return of one of the greatest Batman’s of all time Michael Keaton, and it looks like they even sprinkled a few easter eggs in there as well.

Now, how does this play into the future of the DCU? The Flash obviously is the reset, but how do they transition to connecting these movies as this was well into production when Gunn and Safran were brought on board? Granted they have had some time for a few reshoots, but will they use the character going forward? Despite all his legal troubles, if Ezra Miller’s character is the starting point he almost has to have some small role. There were already rumors he’d be one of the few actors sticking around post-DCEU but there’s no guarantee.

Putting all of his off-camera stuff aside, Ezra looks like his Barry Allen is going to bring us on an emotional rollercoaster. Hopefully, he can put everything in the past and get the help he needs because he is a talented young actor. There are a few scenes in the trailer alone that draw you into his character. With that being said, with enough creativity, it wouldn’t be hard to pivot away from him as well.

James Gunn is no stranger to working with Ezra Miller either having used his Barry Allen as a cameo in the Peacemaker series. Maybe he was laying the groundwork for a much larger universe with more realistic continuity. The Flash has some of the best story arcs in DC with plenty of great sidekicks and characters to choose from. If this movie can be a success and Miller toes the line, there might be a fantastic DCU still to come.
