The Giant Dipper Is A Classic Coaster At Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

The Giant Dipper

ACE (American Coaster Enthusiasts) doesn’t give out a Coaster Landmark award to just any coaster. The Giant Dipper at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is one of America’s most iconic coasters. It’s well deserving of the honor. Not only is it a classic, the Giant Dipper is a fun time for all types of coaster fans.

Built in 1924, the Giant Dipper has a lot of history associated with it. It’s one of the oldest coasters in the world. To this day, it still gives a great ride. While not the most intense or thrilling, there’s something about riding this classic coaster that makes it so special.

If you’re expecting an airtime filled ride, this isn’t the coaster for you. The Giant Dipper isn’t about that. You’ll get some thrills at the beginning of the ride during the enclosed pitch-black tunnel, but that’s about it for major thrills. The rest of the coaster lacks little thrill.

Standing at around 70 feet, the first drop on the Giant Dipper isn’t too intense. In fact, it’s very tame. There are few head chopper moments on the ride. Those are always some of the highlights of any wooden coaster.

There are no seatbelts for the Giant Dipper. This is a lap bar only ride. That’s good for those who like to be lifted out of your seat a bit (Although, if you get any real airtime it’s on the back row). You’ll move around in your seat a lot on this ride, especially if sitting alone. Surprisingly, this coaster isn’t rough at all.

For a coaster of its age, the 55 mph speed is quite fast. However, make no mistake about it, this is a family coaster. All ages can ride the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk classic.

Being an ACE Coaster Landmark, the Giant Dipper is one of Americas most iconic coasters. While not the most intense, this gives a good ride. If at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, this isn’t one to miss, especially for the coaster fans. Although, just about anyone will love this coaster.
