The Lincoln Lawyer: We Need To Stop Rooting For Mickey and Maggie
Netflix, despite issues with its service, continues to pump out quality content. New to the scene is the remake of a classic movie, The Lincoln Lawyer. No Matthew McConaughey this time around, instead, we’re gifted with the talented Manuel Garcia-Rulfo in the lead role of Mickey Haller. While a great storyline for a lawyer trying to get his life back, what stood out the most was the chemistry between him and his first wife Maggie McPherson.
Mickey and Maggie have split and throughout the first few episodes, Maggie has trust issues with Mickey regarding their daughter. In the world of TV romances, who doesn’t like a good boy meets girl, boy loses girl, then boy gets girl back? That’s what the first season was about regarding this pair.
We could sense the tension between the two but as the episodes moved forward, we could also see the walls being broken down. But then, just as fast as they were crumbling, one major roadblock drove a wedge between the two, yet again.
Maggie recruited the help of Mickey for an informant and Mickey told her he was against it. But out of love for his ex, he went against his gut and decided to help. While we don’t know too much about the past between Mickey and Maggie, it was clear in their argument in the last episode that both had a burning desire to win at all costs throughout their relationship.

For Mickey, his fight was just getting back to his former self after the accident, addiction, and most importantly, losing a case for a client he knew to be innocent. But for Maggie, she appeared to have it all together. We would later find out, that she was just as driven as Mickey, if not more.
From the early stages of The Lincoln Lawyer, we knew the regret that Mickey had regarding that client. He wanted to right a wrong. But when the opportunity to do so presented itself, it came with a caution. To be fair, it was one that Mickey didn’t know about at the time.
It was discovered that there were dirty dealings going on and one of the people involved, was Detective Lankford who now was helping Maggie on her big case. But when the truth was revealed, Lankford was charged, thus resulting in complications for Maggie’s case. Maggie was upset with Mickey but how did he know Lankford was involved? That moment in his office was a clear indication that these two cannot work.
By Season 2 of The Lincoln Lawyer, Maggie may have forgiven Mickey, but this seems to be something of the norm for them. While co-parenting has been great, some relationships are better off being left in the past. These two are driven and there’s nothing wrong with that. But in their case, it gets in the way of their personal relationship.
For Maggie and Mickey to work, they need to have a church and state clause in their relationship. What goes on at work, stays at work. If they can’t seem to get that under control, there is no reason for fans to root for their relationship to blossom.
