The Phoenix Suns Can’t Miss Out On Ja Morant

Ja Morant

The Phoenix Suns need a point guard. With the Lakers likely not dealing Lonzo Ball, the NBA Draft might be their best shot at acquiring one. With no real PG at the team’s disposal, something needs to be done quickly. Ja Morant fills the need for the Suns.

I’ve said before that Ja Morant is a good fit for the Cleveland Cavaliers. I’ll stick to that statement, but the Suns make a lot more sense. Seeing as Devin Booker is the best PG on the roster, there’s little reason why the Suns shouldn’t take Morant.

Booker is the team’s best scorer. He can score the ball running the offense, although you definetly want him off the ball. Booker is in the mold of Klay Thompson and Buddy Hield. Both of these players move through screens and do an effective job moving without the ball. A player as efficient as Morant gives Booker a lot more opportunity to score.

Morant is a jack of all trades. He’s not only a natural scorer, but an efficient passer and rebounder. Morant scores 24.1 points per game and averages 10.2 assists and 5.6 rebounds. Stats like these, you’d be inclined to think he’s the next Russell Westbrook.

To further this comparison, there has only been one player in college basketball to average 23 points, 10 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. That player is Ja Morant. He’s near unstoppable on the court. Murray State has put out NBA talent before. Morant looks like he’ll be the best yet.

Some argue that Morant isn’t worthy of the 1 pick. Zion Williamson is an absolute stud, but, for Phoenix, a point guard fits the a more glaring need. Along with last year’s number 1, DeAndre Ayton at C, the Suns have T.J. Warren and Richaun Holmes at PF, Josh Jackson and Kelly Oubre at SF, Booker at SG, and a giant question mark at PG. Ellie Okobo, the Suns 2nd round pick in 2018, has shown flashes.

The only team need other than PG is at the PF position. Holmes isn’t a natural 4. The same can be said for Warren, who’s arguably the Suns second best player. He’s a scorer, but, at 6’8, is he the best option to for the PF spot? There’s also the thought of bringing Oubre along at the PF position. Phoenix can live with the PF rotation as it is now, though.

Going back to Morant, the Suns have the talent to be a playoff team. A star PG will make any team an instant contender. Look at what Sacramento has done this season with De’Aaron Fox. The Kings went from one of the worst teams to a playoff contender. Morant would play a role similar to Fox.

Ja Morant makes the most sense for the Phoenix Suns. If he’s available at the Suns pick, the logical choice is to draft him. Go out and get that star PG. Zion doesn’t fit what the Suns need. Morant might be the best player in of the 2019 class. Phoenix can’t miss out, especially when he plays a position the team needs to win.
