The Rookie: The Hype Was Great But The Ending Sucked

The Rookie

The mommet finally arrived. Season 5 of The Rookie was finally ready to explore the relations between Rosalind Dryer and John Nolan. This has been building for quite some time and even when they should have moved in that direction earlier, the writers dropped the bag. But here were the season premiere promos and it appeared that The Rookie was setting the stage for what should have been a season-long cat-and-mouse chase.

But wait. Just as fast as she came, she was gone just as quickly.

Escaping from the custody of the sheriffs and Nolan led viewers to believe the show would take a dramatic turn from some of its comedy origins. Then, when she almost killed Lucy’s boyfriend, the stakes grew higher. And with a simple phone call to Hohn from the plane’s cockpit, the hunt was on. Then she vanished. While still mentioned in episodes, her character was a no-show.

Rosalind returned and the stakes rose. But the writers jumped the gun here. I felt my heart drop as Rosalind went after Bailey. When it was clear she was the main target, I knew this was Rosalind’s final episode. Despite whatever games she has played with Lucy, it was always going to come down to Rosalind and John. That’s what their relationship was built on.

If you watched her final episode, then you low how it ended. John had to make a life-or-death decision, and in the end, knowing John’s morals, she killed herself. But wait, there is still another killer loose. Rosalind had help. While that would be good further down the line, the Rosalind vs Nolan showdown was a total bummer.

Following what happened with Lucy’s boyfriend at the apartment, it appeared that no one would be safe. Where was the threat to Nyla and her family’s life? Instead, we get an issue with her neighbor across the street. What about coming after SGT Grey and his wife? There were so many angles to take with this one storyline and it fizzled so quickly.

For the writers to send her off with a single GSW to the head, was not the way that should have ended. I understand that going back to prison was not an option but, c’mon, we could have done better with her ending. As a heavy supporter of bringing this storyline back to the script, I was devastated to see it all unfold in less than dramatic fashion.

Rosalind is a certified killer and yet, The Rookie lost Wes to a woman with strong family morals. But Rosalind let everyone live when she had no issue killing innocents.

The Rookie has other storylines to follow now. Maybe we’ll learn the person helping Rosalind is a relative and now wants revenge. Let’s not forget how smart she was. There has to be a plan in place in case of her death and maybe he is the one to see it through. No matter what happens, the original is still the original. Seeing her go out like that was a total letdown after such a great buildup.
