The Sacramento Kings Need to Keep Corey Brewer’s Leadership in House

Sacramento Kings

Veteran leadership can go a long way in helping a young team make the playoffs. Corey Brewer has been in the league for 12 years. He’s been around the block in the NBA. If the Sacramento Kings are serious about winning, re-signing Brewer will be of great importance.

The Kings signed Brewer late in the 2018-19 season. He was much more than a simple late-season add. Brought in to help Sacramento make the playoffs, the play of the veteran gave the team a bit more hope going into next year. That’s only if they keep him on the roster.

“I have a few good years left, and why not spend it with guys like this, where I can help them reach their potential? I hope I’m able to help these guys get to the next level.”

Brewer stated this to Kings great and TV analyst, Doug Christie and starting point guard, De’Aaron Fox, on the Road Trippin podcast. He’s committed to guiding the Kings to the playoffs. If General Manager, Vlade Divac, wants to add a vet to the roster, here’s a guy who wants to be in Sacramento.

Perhaps there’s not a better on-ball defender than Brewer. While team’s shoot a good percentage against him, he makes it hard for opposition to get comfortable in the offense. Similar to Iman Shumpert, who many credit the Kings’ newfound swagger, Brewer isn’t best suited for a scoring role, rather a defensive specialist.

Brewer can take on team’s toughest opponents. His biggest adversary has been Paul Millsap, who despite facing 22 times, has scored 9 points against Brewer. Otherwise, he’s only given up more than 6 or more points against two other’s, Shaun Livingston and DeMar DeRozan. Every other player in the NBA has scored 4 or less per game when guarded by Brewer this season.

There’s one play from Brewer’s season that defines his commitment and toughness. During the Kings April game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Brewer went up for a fastbreak dunk. In what seemed like less than a second, his hand slipped off the rim, causing him to fall right down on the back of his head. He finished the game, with no serious injury.

You need a player like this on your roster no matter the circumstance. Brewer alone won’t make the Kings a top-five scoring threat. His defense can create a lot of fastbreak opportunities, though. This, along with his leadership and toughness, is reason the Sacramento Kings look like a different roster with him there.
