The Walking Dead: Do We Really Need Another Spin-off

Michonne from The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is a victim of its own success. Not only did the wildly popular comic book series turn into an arguably just as popular television series. Unfortunately for fans, they will milk that cash cow dry as yet another spin-off is in the works for the AMC series. There’s the original show, Fear the Walking Dead, Tales of the Walking Dead, World Beyond, Dead City, Daryl Dixon, and The Ones Who Lived. Who are they making these for? There’s no way people are that emotionally invested still.

Given that the main series limped to the finish line, I doubt it. AMC can throw all the numbers and ratings out they want, but anyone I heard from was only still watching it because they invested so much time they had to see how it ended. That’s not a good sign for people who were in absolute love with this series. If we’re being honest, it feels like AMC is just shoveling these spin-offs down our throats because otherwise there’d be limited reason to subscribe to their stand-alone streamer AMC+ which doesn’t need to exist.

While most of these spin-offs are limited series, do we really need them to fill the gaps in the plot? Do they tie into the shared universe well enough that their continuity makes a groundbreaking revelation? Probably not. At the very best if they do a six-episode limited series run, it’ll most likely be filler that we didn’t really care for, with one big reveal. That’s not worthy of a whole series. It’s the same problem Disney is running into with the Star Wars and MCU shows. So much of the content feels like they’re stalling until they can hit on their next big thing.

Look, I’m not attacking the series themselves, the actors, or anyone involved in the cast/crew. I wouldn’t dare call anyone out if they actually like these shows. You’re each entitled to your own opinion just as I am mine. The Walking Dead comic book fans loved it with a passion but some hated the show. The die-hard fans loved the show but lost interest towards the end. There were people still watching but only to see the conclusion. How is it that these series keep getting green-lit if the more they go on, the more people check out?
