The Witcher: Thankfully, Its not a Game of Thrones Clone

Netflix might have dug into the vault a bit to create the next big show and they nailed it. With their latest Netflix original The Witcher, they dive into the fantasy genre that was thrust back into the spotlight with HBO’s Game of Thrones. Luckily for viewers, that’s where the similarities have ended so far. Everyone wants the next GoT but just because the show dabbles into the fantasy realm, doesn’t mean they’ve recreated the hit show.

No, The Witcher stands on its own and actually is closer to the fantasy genre than Game of Thrones was. For GoT, the White Walkers and Dragons were a major part of the stories plot but it was the battle for power between houses, the intrigue who would take the throne by the end, and who would betray who that made the show drift a bit away from fantasy and realistic themes took over.

With The Witcher, however, you can’t deny the fantasy roots. From the first scene on when Geralt is fighting off one of the creatures of the realms, you see his power in action. From that point on we skip around to show just how much the show pushes the fantasy envelope. There are dragons, but there are also mages, sorcerers, and kings/queens that play their part in the plot.

Being that it’s only in the first season, diving too deep into the story would give a ton away. With 7-8 books going back to 1992, and some video games to go on, the show has a ton of source material to build on. CavemenRadioShow was late to the party but instantly binged it in the first week. While it does have all the makings of the next big fantasy show, it’s not even close to Game of Thrones. A refreshing fact that most audiences will welcome. Originality is what keeps shows strong and the copy-cats are wearing out views.

The Witcher season two might be a good way down the road but at least if you need more there’s plenty to indulge in. Bookworms should start with The Last Wish, available on Amazon, and go from there. If the fantasy world is your go-to genre, then diving into the Witcher should be next on your list.
