Titans have been a long-standing DC title in the comics for years. A spinoff of Batman comics where Dick Greyson having grown frustrated with Bruce Wayne abandons him to form his own team of heroes. First came Teen Titans and eventually just Titans. It’s very clear to distinguish between the two as of right now, both series are still running in the comics and have two different character team-ups.

Now Titans itself doesn’t look as bad as people are making it out to be. Critics are already blasting the characters, their likeness, their costumes, and even their stories. Which is odd, because we haven’t seen a single one yet. We all know Dick Greyson’s backstory. We’ve seen him grow into the hero we want him to be. However, people are already jumping on the “this is going to suck”bandwagon long before the show even starts because it’s not the Greyson we know and love. Which makes no sense, because it’s an origin story. Starting off without having room to grow will damn a character early on and make for a boring show.

There’s something about an origin story where fans are a bit harsh on. Remember Arrow when it first started was a little slow before they really got into the action. It was right around the halfway point of season 1. Same thing with Gotham. Gotham was so bad I didn’t even make it past episode 2 to start, and now fans love it. All good shows take time to develop greatness.

Titans stands a better chance than critics are already giving it for one simple reason. DC has used its power in a streaming service to provide an R-rating for their streaming properties. No more kids gloves in our action. Everyone heard the “F@#k Batman” in the trailer and either loved it or hated it. “Dick would never say that”! Maybe, maybe not. However, the whole storyline revolves around his frustration with Batman. Besides, how do we know he’d never say that we don’t have a mature audience rating on Batman titles. Most comics are written for the general audience to enjoy and typically don’t involve swearing.

“But Dick Greyson wouldn’t kill anyone.” Alright, that one I can’t even argue. However, clearly in this version of Titans Robin has lost his way. The most important thing to remember is not how the character starts off, but where he ends. What will make or break this show is if the characters grow into the type of heroes we expect them to be. Not five seasons in, by the end of season 1 they need to be carbon copies of what we’ve seen on the pages of the comics. Does DC have the writing power to do these characters justice in their first live-action streaming show?[CMRickTwitter]
