Top 5 Quarterbacks Madden Ratings Got Wrong
The NFL is a make or break league for a lot of quarterbacks. So many flourishes in college only to get to the NFL and become busts. Some go on a career journeyman, some go on to the CFL, some just flat out stop playing. This past week, EA’s Madden 21 released their quarterback ratings for the 2020-2021 season and some of those are head-scratchers.
Kyler Murray – 76
While the Arizona Cardinals weren’t anything to write back home about last season, Kyler Murray was the Offensive Rookie of the Year. As a rookie, he threw almost 4,000 yards with a 5:2 touchdown to interception ratio and the Cardinals only got better. After a trade with the Houston Texans, Murray should have a much dangerous deep threat weapon in DeAndre Hopkins. The Cardinals could be an outside favorite to make the playoffs this season. Murray should easily be ranked in the low to mid-80s.
Tua Tagovailoa -73
While rookies don’t typically get much love until the NFL season begins, Tua still is the second-highest-rated rookie. If not for his injury last season, he was arguably the top quarterback going into this year’s Draft. Nothing about his game changed other than the fact he lost a year due to injury. Now, Joe Burrow was the top pick overall, but with all of his intangibles and ignoring his injury, the two should be neck and neck around 75-76.

Deshaun Watson – 86
Watson is a game-changer for the Texans. Despite losing his best option in a trade with the Cardinals, unless they plan to change their whole offense he’ll still be the spark on that team. While 86 isn’t a terrible mark, Watson controlling the game the way he does puts his skillset closer to the 89-91 range.
Dak Prescott – 84
Dak is tied with Carson Wentz for the ninth spot on the top QB list according to Madden. As an Eagles fan, you have to be laughing at that. Yes the Eagles struggled last year and Wentz has had his injury history, but Dak has never had the Cowboys offense running as smoothly as it did when Wentz had the Eagles as Super Bowl favorites. Prescott has had the benefit of a top running back, top receiver, and top tight end. Top that off with one of the best offensive lines in football, their offense should be scary good. Prescott just isn’t a game-changing quarterback and his rating should reflect that at about 80-81.
Russell Wilson – 97
Sorry EA, but Wilson deserves to be in the 99 clubs. Yeah, he’s hobbled every year with minor injuries, but he’s been fighting behind a line that can’t keep him off the turf. As inconsistent as their play has been, Russel Wilson continues to make something out of nothing and keep the Seahawks relevant.
Lost in the superstardom of quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes, Wilson has been that guy for years and is a bad play call away from being a two time Super Bowl champ before the age of 30. He’s kept Pete Carrol off the hot seat for more than one season now with little to no fanfare anymore. If anyone deserves the 99 club who isn’t in it, its Russell Wilson.
Okay, Madden ratings mean nothing in the overall scheme of the NFL. It’s fun to scroll around social media and poke fun at best. However, with the growth of eSports and offseason gaming pushed to the forefront this year, look for the Madden ratings reveal to start being another offseason event like an award show.
