Travel: I’ve Never Been On a Cruise Ship Because I’m Terrified

Cruise Ships

Plenty of my friends have found their way on Cruise Ships traveling either alone, with family, or friends. But for some reason, I’ve always found a way to avoid getting on any ship. When asked, I’m very truthful with my answer. “I’m terrified”. The response I would often get is how safe they are. And while that may be true, my response to them is always the same, “Jack Dawson”.

For those who don’t know who that is, you may want to Google that name. Yup, it’s the same Jack Dawson from the hit 1997 movie, Titanic. Laugh all you want, but that movie is what turned me off ships. I don’t care what anyone says, a boat that big has no reason to be now sitting at the bottom of any ocean.

I get it, Cruise Ships have changed over the years and I often catch myself in awe of what they do offer. As great as the Titanic was, ships are pretty much a floating city. They offer Basketball Courts, Theaters, Nightclubs, Comedy Clubs, Fine Dining, Retail Shopping, Rock Climbing, Zip-Lining, and more. What’s not to love about that?

Living in New York, I can get all that from 34th St to Times Square but to have all these options on a ship seems a bit enticing. While the rooms are no bigger than a hotel room in the city, who plans to spend all their time locked in a cabin anyway? If that’s the case, you might as well just stay home and walk around the city.

Just writing this article, my research led me to many different companies and types of ships. 4 of the most popular are Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, and Disney Cruise Line. For most, it all depends on what you’re looking for. While the features are great, what I look for is just a commitment to safety. Once again, it may sound foolish to you, but that is my fear.

I can get on a plane with ease. Ride in a car with my son who just got his driver’s license, but getting on a boat, while scary, may appear to be the safest of them all. But that fear of a large body of water gets me every time.

Living in NYC, I’ve traveled back and forth to Staten Island on the Ferry and even that had me terrified. However, I think I’m ready to take a cruise and as the saying goes, you only live once, right? But I will tell you what, I’d rather go alone as I don’t have the time to be fighting no Rose over space on a floating device. (lol)
