Tv Icons: Greatest Tv Shows Of All Time Pt. 2 – Dexter

Showtime's Dexter

When it comes to premium channels, most viewers see HBO as the king of content. They’ve had hits like The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, and The Wire. However, Showtime edged its way into the competition with its hit series Dexter. Before the Nurse Jackies and Yellow Jackets, there was a series about an ordinary guy who worked for the Miami police department by day and was a serial killer by night.

Dexter was a hit for Showtime with audiences for eight seasons. The show itself made you second-guess your own moral code. Even if a serial killer only kills bad people, does that make him a good or bad person? Dexter was taught this moral code to only go after those who deserved it. The majority of his victims were murderers, rapists, and pedophiles. More often than not, these were the type of people viewers saw the world as better off without. In a way, it was both exciting and a bit naughty to root for the serial killer. He’s a good man that protected people, but it still felt a little odd when you found yourself wishing he’d take his next victim.

While the show had its highs and lows, in its prime it had some of the best episodes on television. Audiences saw Dexter as a way to get justice in a world that doesn’t always offer justice. The evolution of the character from a cold and heartless killer to a misunderstood renegade who cared for his loved ones drew people to the show. It had a way of showing both sides of his emotional scale his hatred for the world around him, and his love for the people in his life. The relatability of wanting to protect your friends and family at all costs had that inviting nature despite it being a show about someone who kills for fun.

When the show ended, it had a decent amount of backlash from the fans, so much show that they spawned a sequel show Dexter: New Blood to finish the story and give fans the ending they deserved. Despite that being a limited run, fans would have liked to see the show’s success go on. Anything with the star power to be brought back after years of cancellation to finish the story deserves a spot on the All-Time Greatest Shows list. Not for a money grab/reboot Dexter was brought back for audiences to get the closure to the story and fix their wrongs.

No matter where it falls on your list of all-time greatest shows it has to be near the top. The thrill of who he’ll go after next, how will he get caught, and who will be the one to find him out was what kept the show going. Every wrinkle, every jam he got into the curiosity of how Dexter would get out of the mess or it would be what finally did him in kept you tuning in every week.
