TV Reboots: Is The Nostalgia Finally Over?
With all the bad things happening in the world around us, nostalgia gives us that little break from life and takes us back to the days where everything seemed a bit easier. As we get older there’s so much going on around us that taking a time to remind ourselves where we came from made us who we are. Television writers know this and try to strike gold with tv we once knew and loved.
By adding tv shows that we loved as kids to our adult programming, it gives many parents the opportunity to bond with their children over family television as we used to in the old days. Unfortunately, despite the nostalgia, studios rarely strike gold with these “original program”-type shows that never fully capture the magic of the original.
With that being said, we have to wonder, is the nostalgia finally over?
More Entertainment: A Nightmare On Elm Street – The Perfect New Freddy?
Shows like Full House and Boys Meets World had limited successful reboots lasting more than one season. However, most shows that are streaming these days have shortened their seasons down to 10-13 episodes. Would there be as many seasons if they had to run a full series order of 20+?
Then, of course, there are the one-and-dones. Shows like Punky Brewster, Beverly Hills 90210, and Heroes couldn’t survive the tv chopping block. So many of these shows were fan favorites growing up, but do they have writing staffs that are out of touch with today’s television, or are they tv’s equivalent to movie sequels?
Maybe writers are really out of ideas for creating new and original content. Is the pressure to keep up with streaming getting to the studios? Is binging cutting changing the way we watch our favorite shows? It seems like the days of the family sitcom are over in favor of original content.
Whatever the case may be, if studios are looking for nostalgia to create interest in their streaming platforms, they’re failing miserably. They can’t afford to take chances with their content with the demand for constant streaming subscritions. How long will it be before we see a long-lasting reboot that lives up to the original?
