UFC: Conor McGregor retires at an odd time in his career
I’ll admit I was surprised that Conor McGregor retired from the MMA and UFC world this week. However, the timing of his decision is head scratching.
Currently, there is an investigation taking place in his native Ireland for a sexual assault allegation, so who knows if McGregor is just temporarily calling it quits until the investigation is over.
Regardless, McGregor is currently 21-4 and #2 in the lightweight division, but his last fight was a loss by submission.
It would seem as if the Irishman is trying to get more money with this move and even if it isn’t McGregor should want to redeem himself after getting placed into submission by Khabib Nurmagomedov back in October.
Not only does McGregor bring plenty of entertainment and a big personality to the UFC, but he is a star like no other in sports.
Even though it would be nice to see him back in the octagon again, I would understand if McGregor is taking time to fix his image.
Not only is an investigation taking place in Ireland, but there was the bus attack in Brooklyn, NY last April and he had his driver’s license suspended for six months in Ireland following a speeding violation in 2017.
It’s clear that McGregor has work to do in the public eye and he can get carried away with his trash talk, but there has been no comment made as to why he chose to retire.
At the end of the day, the MMA headliner had a few wake up calls over the last two years, from Khabib beating him into submission to boxer Floyd Mayweather toying with him during a fight in August 2017 “The Notorious” McGregor should have wanted a to keep his career going to the point where it could be considered noteworthy forever.
Now it just seems like he will be remembered only for his antics and the way he finished, which isn’t what a true fighting champion should want to know as.
