The Walking Dead: Our World (AR) Review – Cavemen Radio Show
With augmented reality becoming the new normal in today’s technology-driven world, you can expect more and more companies to get on board. When Pokemon Go kicked down the door of the gaming community, it woke the rest of the world up to just how much our handheld devices can do. Now there are plenty of AR games out there with the likes of Pokemon, Jurassic World Alive, and now Walking Dead: Our World. Augmented reality is a fun way for gamers to include the world around them into the games they’re currently playing instead of being stuck in a single room staring at a television screen.
AMC’s The Walking Dead has been one of the most popular shows in history. Robert Kirkman’s comic, where the idea originated, is a fan favorite amongst readers, and there have been plenty of spinoff games on handheld devices including No Man’s Land on phones and Telltale’s console game. So what makes Our World any different from these games or other AR based ones?
Simple answer? There isn’t one. The game itself has all the makings of a cut and copy game. However, it’s the depth in which there are things to do which keep the game interesting. I didn’t play Pokemon Go for long so they may have expanded and they may have expanded. However, the game itself was basic. You’d walk around until you found your target, a couple flicks of the finger, boom new Pokemon. At least with The Walking Dead: Our World you can shoot small or large hoards, collect cards to level up your weapons or heroes, rescue survivors to bring back to your safe house, and occasionally smoke out and raid other camps.
The Verdict:
Maybe The Walking Dead: Our World doesn’t have the overwhelming success that Pokemon Go did as it was the first of its kind. The game still is going through the same crashes that Pokemon Go did. However, it seems a bit more stable off the bat. Not only can you play in an augmented reality world using Google Maps, but you can also choose between a pre-created backdrop for the battles or if you’re in a safe place to stop, kick up the AR and shoot the zombies in the world around you. The only downside is unlike the standard shot, when you’re in AR mode you can’t move from where you’re standing until the fight is over.
The Walking Dead: Our World may have learned from the mistakes Pokemon Go made along the way. Unfortunately for them, the hype of the show is dying down, they’re a little late to the party with AR games, and a mid-summer release might slow the desire for mindless wandering around neighborhoods. The game itself is fun enough to have tremendous success, but how long will they stay afloat?[CMRickTwitter]
