Washington Football Team: Offseason Panic Mode 2021 Edition

Washington QB Alex Smith

Despite the feel-good season that included a playoff appearance, the Washington Football Team has a lot more work to be done. A 7-9 season isn’t really pushing the envelope of the NFC and they’ll need to do some serious retooling to avoid panic mode this offseason.

Identity Crisis

No, we’re not just talking about the naming rights of the formerly known Washington Redskins. Even allowing the time frame to choose a proper mascot, the play on the field is what lacked identity. In the bottom third of the league in total offense, but towards the top on defense. Despite ranking near the top in total defense, they relied heavily on their pass defense to shut it down. Their run defense could use a little bit of strength. Going into the offseason, if they can bring their run defense in the top of the league at least one side of the ball will be feared.

Slim Lineup of Playmakers On Offense

While Taylor Heinicke showed up for the Washington Football Team in the playoffs, there’s no saying he’ll be their quarterback of the future. They lacked a 1,000-yard rusher despite Antonio Gibson having double-digit touchdowns. Terry McLaurin was the leading receiver for Washington but the next closest receiver had just over 600 yards.

Wasted Turnovers

The Washington Football Team was near the top of the NFL in interceptions this season. The battle of field position is often won by drive-killing turnovers and Washington had their fair share. While their defense might have to lead them to victories in close games, those matchups can easily get out of control if they can’t punch it across the goal line on offense.

Bigger Bulk Up Front

Between needing playmakers, needing a quarterback, and needing to get into the end zone there’s one position that will greatly improve their chances. If Washington can get a beefed-up front line this season, they can give their young QB more time if they draft one. If they bring in a proven veteran, it’ll give him time to develop with their receivers.

Gibson was solid at getting into the end zone but his overall productivity was down, which can be improved with better pushes upfront. NFL seasons are won with these boring moves in the offseason. No one likes when a team focuses solely on lineman, but that’s what turns teams around.

Make no mistake about it, 2020 was about rebuilding for the Washington Football Team. The new name, new coach, new QBs were all about changing the culture surrounding the team. While making the playoffs keeps fans happy, they’re still going to need to grind out another solid year or two before being true contenders.
