Sonic The Hedgehog

2020 has been a flustercluck of a year. With that being said, there have been a great collection of films released thus far. Picking a top-5 at the mid-point of the year isn’t easy. However, these films stood out in a rather crowded 2020 film season.

Honorable Mention:

Vast of Night

This one really took everyone by surprise. On par with that of big blockbusters such as Close Encounters by Steven Spielberg, this low budget masterpiece tells a great story without breaking the bank. A very dialogue-heavy film, this sci-fi picture is a wonderful addition to the year.

5. Vivarium

I stumbled upon this movie because Jesse Eisenberg is arguably my favorite actor. I wasn’t disappointed at all. The story can be a bit hard to follow (especially the end), however it all ties together nicely. Like Honorable Mention, Vast of Night, this sci-fi film kind of comes out of nowhere. If you enjoy Eisenberg’s previous films (Zombieland, Social Network) this might be a bit of a departure. Co-star, Imogen Poots, shines as well in a dark film that gives off some vibes from her breakout hit, Green Room.

4. Da 5 Bloods

Spike Lee did a masterful job with Da 5 Bloods. While not his best film, the Netflix original is full of all the things that make Lee such a fantastic filmmaker. The beginning of the film can be a bit of a chore to watch, however, the movie finds its stride near the end of the second and entirety of the third act. Delroy Lindo gives what I’d say is the performance of the year thus far.

3. Arkansas

This independent film from Clarke Duke (The Office, Hot Tub Time Machine) really won me over. Not the best film in terms of pacing, however, there’s good action and a very tense vibe surrounding it. Vince Vaugh plays a much different role than we are used to seeing him. A lot of the acclaim I’ve given this film is due to Duke’s directing. For a first-time director to nail this as well as he did, that can’t go unnoticed.

2. The Way Back

Yes, this film is a showcase for Ben Affleck. Although, it works surprisingly well. Affleck is outstanding in this film. A lot of the issues he tackles here seem to be taken from his every day life. The basketball scenes in The Way Back are realistic, as is the way he talks to his players. As with most drama films, you get a sense of closure at the end. I’d venture to say this is the best acting role of Affleck’s career (yes, better than Argo and The Town).

1. Sonic the Hedgehog

A perfect family adventure, Sonic wasn’t given much of a chance upon its release. Instead, we were given a great film that really took everyone by surprise. Jim Carrey stole the show as Dr. Robotnik, and was the reason for many as to why this film was so much better than anticipated.
