What was once a show about a caring loving family who overcame their struggles together, has turned into total crap. In i fifth season, This Is Us has devolved into a show that was about the Pearsons and how they loved and cared so much for each other, and now they’re all selfish, cynical, jerks.

I keep holding out hope that the show will turn around and bring it all back together, but with each passing episode comes more doom and gloom. The characters you’d hope that would develop into better versions of themselves just keep getting more and more selfish and pushing each other further away from each other.

The hardest part of the show, is watching these three characters who had the most caring and loving of fathers, not a one of them have turned out anything like him. How they’ve been left with such great role models, ones who have shown that family is the best way to overcome any of life’s problems, and all three of the Pearson take their problems out on each other. Where did they learn this hostility towards each other?

A lot of who we are as people, good or bad, we’ve learned from our parents. Take Jack Pearson for instance. His struggle with alcoholism he picked up from his father, that’s his battle. However, it’s his father’s anger and abuse that pushes him to be a better man and a loving father.

So to take Kate, Kevin, and Randall who have had those role models in their lives, people that they want to be better than, why are they devolving into such hateful and spiteful adults? You would think that this loving family who were shown how to overcome struggles with the help of family, how do they hate each other so much?

True they’ve had their differences, but none of who they’ve been raised to be is showing up in these situations and it’s getting worse as the show grows. As viewers, we’re getting full seasons of anger and frustrations only for them to wrap it up with a fancy bow in the season finale. We shouldn’t be treated to 20 plus episodes of a hateful and spiteful family.

It’s not just limited to sibling rivalries either. Take Toby and Kate, who have had their bumps and bruises along the way. Randall and Beth got to a point where we weren’t sure they’d stay together. Kevin has had relationship after relationship fail until now he might be settling into one.

How This Is Us started so strong as a show about family and overcoming the odds devolved into a family who has no joy in their life is just frustrating. The writing for each story line is so strong, only to be discredited by the character development to the point it’s barely watchable anymore.
