Which Trial Of The Chicago 7 actor has the best shot at taking home the coveted Academy Award? There isn’t one weak link out of the ensemble. Netflix will need to determine which actors deserve consideration in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. In the meantime, which performances stood out the most in this masterpiece? Who towers over the rest as the best actor in the film?

4. Eddie Redmayne (Tom Hayden)

Redmayne isn’t a stranger to the Academy. He’s previously won Best Actor for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in Theory of Everything. Redmayne is ranked low, not because of his acting in the film, but rather being overshadowed by some other incredible performances. Still, playing party leader, Hayden, this performance shouldn’t go unnoticed. He keeps a calm and cool tone throughout the film, only to showcase his intense acting ability in the final 20 minutes of the film.

Redmayne does have somewhat of an advantage for an Oscar. He’ll likely be considered as the lead for Trial of the Chicago 7. It’ll be a tough nomination for him to score, although, Netflix will probably put him here because they’ll have a better shot at nabbing a supporting role with the other three actors on this list

3. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Bobby Seale)

Why isn’t Abdul-Mateen higher on the list? The actor was sensational in his role as Bobby Seale, the Black Panther Chairman who is wrongfully grouped with the Chicago 7. His only real knock, has nothing to do with him, rather his lack of screen time. While Abdul-Mateen II is on the screen, nothing but pure brilliance. The back and forth between his character and Judge Julius Hoffman (Frank Langella) really gets the nerves going.

Again, if it weren’t for the lack of screen time, he’d be a shoo-in for the best supporting actor of the film. The first half of Chicago 7 is carried by his performance. That’s a real shame we couldn’t see more of the brilliance from Abdul-Mateen II in this film.

2. Mark Rylance (William Kunstler)

Playing as the defense counselor, Rylance proves once again why he’s an Academy favorite. Like Abdul-Mateen II, the dialogue and interaction between Rylance and Langella knows no bounds. The two play so well off of each other.

There’s real anger and frustration from Rylance in this role. You feel that emotion come though your television. The character of Kunstler really goes hard into the defense. He doesn’t let up at any point. Rylance is at a constant 100% energy the entire film.

1. Sacha Baron Cohen (Abbie Hoffman)

Trial of the Chicago 7 wouldn’t be the film it is without Cohen. His normal slapstick comedy routine is featured, more so at the beginning of the film. It helps break up the movie. You will take this film as a serious piece of art. However, the Hoffman dialogue that Aaron Sorkin wrote  injects some comedic life into the film. And could only be played by Sacha Baron Cohen.

Hoffman is a real change of pace from some of the other cast. Redmayne, Rylance, Abdul-Mateen, Gordon-Levitt, all bring something to the table, it’s Baron Cohen that sets the movie apart. Such a great piece of acting, one which also showcased the actors serious side as well. However, the real gem of this movie is the comedic relief Sacha Baron Cohen brings.

More Entertainment: Never A Dull Moment in the MCU

With so many prime acting performances, The Trial of the Chicago 7 will have a lot of representation at the Academy Awards. These 4 are the strongest of the film, thus being Netflix’s best shot at an Oscar. Yet, even without the allure of Oscar gold, these performances won’t get overlooked at any point in the near future. Simply some of the best ensemble work in decades.
