Who’s The Best Backup Point Guard Option For The Sacramento Kings?

Kings

What’s the status of Yogi Ferrell and Frank Mason going forward? It’s been well documented that the Sacramento Kings need a more efficient backup Point Guard. Both Mason and Ferrell are limited. However, If no point guard is signed in free agency, there’s no better option for the team moving forward.

There have been good games from both Ferrell and Mason. While neither is viewed as a long-term starting option for the Kings (The Kings have De’Aaron Fox), both can fight for the long-term backup job. At least, they are both young enough where they haven’t yet reached their peaks.

Ferrell has been the primary backup to Fox. Of himself and Mason, Yogi Ferrell is the more experienced of the two ( 3 NBA seasons). Mason, who has had more games he hasn’t played than has, is just now finishing his second season. Both are 25-years-old.

There’s only room for one as the Kings backup PG. Ferrell is signed through the 2019-20 season. Mason’s contract extends to the 2020-21 season. The Kings haven’t been trying to groom Mason to be the team’s starter, because they drafted him the same year as Fox. Ferrell signed a contract with the Kings in 2018.

One thing is for sure, both Ferrell and Mason need to work on their defense. It’s tough to get a read on Mason. He seems to only play during blowout wins or losses. Ferrell has a -2.9 +/- rating as a starter, and a -1.5 as a reserve. It’s a small detail that both would need to work address in the off-season. That doesn’t need to be a red flag on either, just something to think about when debating on grabbing a free agent point guard.

If the Kings can’t sign a veteran backup PG, they’ll probably roll into the season with Ferrell as the team’s primary backup. He’s the more experienced and tested option. If the Sacramento Kings want to compete for a playoff spot, he’s the logical choice of who’s on the roster now.

Again, the Kings might sign a veteran free agent to run the point behind Fox. Considering Ferrell and Mason are both under contract this next year, keeping them seems like the obvious thing to do. The Kings need to re-sign Harrison Barnes and turn their attention to Nikola Vucecic. If possible, they’ll look for that backup point guard after both of those options have cleared themselves up.

When the smoke clears, the Sacramento Kings will probably have Yogi Ferrell as the backup PG once again. Frank Mason will be the end of the bench guy. Considering all of the other needs the Kings have, signing a backup PG just seems like less of a concern than other roster spots. Sacramento can win with Yogi Ferrell, and they can probably win with Frank Mason. Both are solid options for the team moving forward.
