Why Did The Notebook Hit Our Emotions Different?
In 2004, one movie changed the way viewers classified romantic movies. And what really has stood out about The Notebook since then has been its lasting power. Arguably the greatest romantic movie ever made, The Notebook was not really special in terms of Oscar-worthy dialogue, and yet, it was worthy of an Oscar.
Romance movies have always been in high demand for Hollywood. It doesn’t matter the ethnic background of the stars, it’s how chemistry is portrayed on-screen that makes a movie stick out.

What The Notebook offered was a glimpse of love. No, not the kind you may share when you see your significant other but the kind that makes you look at them and smile. The kind that takes you on a trip down memory lane and forces us to remember how it all started. That’s what Noah and Allie provided. We were taken on a journey through the course of a relationship that was not supposed to happen, let alone last as long as it did.
Two kids from opposites sides of the tracks and they made it work. Hell, even when it wasn’t working, it was still working. We knew they belonged together, it was just waiting for them to figure it out. It took years but the end result is what we all dream about when we’re standing before God and our family to give those sacred vows. For better or worse, till death do us part.
But even then, their bond was stronger than their vows. Death did not do them part. Their love took them out together. Who doesn’t want that? Who does not envision that when you first see your future wife or husband? The Notebook stood for what romance movies should be about. And still, Hollywood has not bee able to match that.
It’s either comedy mixed with drama, mixed with some form of violence but never a pure boy meets girl, boy losses girl then finds her again type of movie.
I love action movies. I can get behind a good drama but where is the next Notebook? Where is the next movie that will make me wanna go out and search for that significant other? Where is the next movie that will make me wanna build a house for a woman I haven’t seen in years? Where is the next movie that will make her go against her parents for what she believes in? Or, where is the next movie that will make her look her soon-to-be-husband in the face and tell him she’s in love with both of us?
We need that right now. Hell, we need one of those true romantic movies once or twice a year. That’s what The Notebook was. It made you question everything you thought you knew about love.
