Why Does Duke Johnson Jr. Want To Leave The Cleveland Browns Now?

Duke Johnson

When the Cleveland Browns signed Kareem Hunt to a contract this off-season, the writing was on the wall for Duke Johnson. Firmly behind Hunt and current starter, Nick Chubb, on the depth chart, can you blame Johnson for wanting a trade? Regardless, he’s still a valuable part of the Browns team.

The Browns are deep at just about every skill position on offense. Johnson, who’s been a great option running back for the team over the last few years, isn’t needed because of Cleveland’s depth. Knowing this, Johnson wants out. However, it’s quite perplexing as to the timing. The Browns are going to be a playoff team in 2020.

Duke Johnson can be a part of the Browns three-headed RB committee. Pairing with Chubb and Hunt, he would give Cleveland the best backfield trio in all of football. Johnson would still play a big role in a majority of the Browns season. Hunt is out for the team’s first 8 games.

On the off chance Chubb gets hurt in Hunt’s absence (which he’s had an injury history in college), Johnson would take on the lead role. And Cleveland shouldn’t abandon Duke Johnson when Hunt returns. He’s still a great 3rd Down back. In 2019, Duke Johnson recorded 47 receptions and 3 TD’s.

Johnson is going to showcase himself on the most dangerous offense in the NFL. He can be used on the field in many ways. Johnson was playing at the slot WR position at some points last year. If Duke is not used to his full ability this upcoming season or before the trade deadline, then ask for a trade. Why leave when things are just about to pick up.

It’s obvious that Duke Johnson felt a bit betrayed by the signing of Kareem Hunt. He had a good role with the Cleveland Browns. Now, sitting third on the depth chart, he’s deemed expendable. Who knows if the Dorsey wants to trade Johnson, or if he’ll force his hand. Either way, the Cleveland Browns aren’t getting better with the loss of Duke Johnson.
