With Streaming, Is It Time To Reboot Firefly?

Tv’s Firefly

Lasting just one season, Fox’s Firefly quickly formed a fan following. Unluckily for fans, it wasn’t enough to help with ratings and the show was quickly canceled after just one season breaking the hearts of viewers. Now that Fox has been sold to Disney, is it time for the House of Mouse to bring the show back for loyal fans, if they own the rights?

“Set 500 years in the future after a universal civil war, the crew of a small transport spaceship takes any job so long as it puts food on the table. The disparate men and women just want to survive and maybe have better lives, but they face constant challenges on the new frontier, such as the Reavers — flesh-eating mongrels who live on the fringes of the universe.”

A Joss Whedon space Western back in 2002, Firefly gained late praise by audiences. Attachment to the show was too little too late but the die-hard fans still are holding out hope. Shows like The Mandalorian already are showing that there’s still a place for space Westerns in modern television and networks/streamers should take note.

Disney has a few ways to make a reboot work. While the show has adult themes, it is a sci-fi show that is suitable for kids. First is Disney+ where Firefly could surely fit in. While it is a family-friendly streaming app it won’t be without its shows suitable for all ages. Disney already loads the streaming service with the beat ‘em up Marvel Cinematic Universe and Firefly could fit in.

Then, of course, there’s Hulu which Disney now owns a majority stake. Hulu has fallen behind in originals and could use a fan following. Should they bring Firefly back from the dead, they’d have their next-day streaming audience as well as the buzz of a long-loved show.

There’s probably a good chance that Firefly is long dead and has no shot at coming back. However, if fans can speak loud enough to get the Deadpool movie revived and picked up for its third movie, then never say never. The entertainment world has done some strange things, and reboots are all the rage. Would fans accept a reboot 18 years later?
