Would American Pie Work As a Television Series?
All the way back in 1999 the American Pie franchise kicked off with what would become one of the most outrageous comedies of an era. Exploring the impressional teenage mind when it comes to coming-of-age and sexual fantasy, American Pie goes from the overly active sex drives of high school seniors to an eventual wedding, and capping off, of course, with a class reunion.
What made American Pie so successful as a series was how outrageously over the top it was, while still being relatable to the common audience. No, not everyone has tried to have their way with warm apple pie, but it takes the urges of a young wandering mind and exploits them in hilariously embarrassing ways. Not only are the thoughts of the young mind relatable, almost everyone has at least one embarrassing teenage story when it comes to discovering themselves or others.

With that being said, in a reboot culture, American Pie might not have a strong enough hold on the comedy genre to bring back a beloved favorite. The movies themselves even had straight-to-DVD spinoffs that limped their way into homes. But we can’t help but wonder if there’s still a way to bring back a comedy classic, as a television series for streaming.
It would be next to impossible to make an ongoing television series like American Pie that spanned multiple seasons and followed the exploits of a small group of characters in one central story. However, there is an opportunity for American Pie to evolve into an anthology series. Eight to ten episodes that follow the exploits of a group of small-town adults navigating their way through the dating pool and dating apps, whose stories are separate but somehow interact wouldn’t be too hard of a concept to draw up. The potential to keep the story fresh would develop as each season wraps, it closes the book on the series of strangers whose dating lives comedically fail in epic fashion.
American Pie itself was probably too over the top for today’s audiences on the big screen, but streaming services have a bit more freedom. If they could find a way to scale back slightly but keep the comedy, it could work with a little creativity.
