WrestleMania 36: Who Is Rumored to Face John Cena?

Since 2002, John Cena has been the face of WWE. However, with his success in the movie industry, he has become a part-time wrestler. For most of his career, he would have one of the bigger matches at WrestleMania. The last time John Cena had a big match at WrestleMania, it was at WrestleMania 31 when he defeated Rusev to win the US title. Starting with WrestleMania 32, he would just have moments.

At WrestleMania 32, he had the run-in to help the Rock take on the Wyatt Family. He teamed with Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33 to defeat The Miz and Maryse. John Cena would then propose to Nikki afterward. He did take on The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34, but that was a short, non- memorable match. He would interrupt Elias at WrestleMania 35 as his old gimmick of Dr. Thuganomics.

It was reported weeks ago that John Cena wants to work an actual match at this year’s event. Also, it seems that WWE is letting John Cena pick his opponent. Now, there are several websites reporting that John Cena is set to take on Elias at this year’s WrestleMania.

While many people are sort of surprised by this move, I actually like it. At WrestleMania 34 and 35, Elias had a musical segment. Both times he was interrupted by John Cena. There is a story already built-in. However, like the case when John Cena has faced an up and comer he would end up beating them. As we saw at WrestleMania 30, he defeated Bray Wyatt. At WrestleMania 31, we saw him defeat Rusev.

However, I don’t see that being the case with Elias. While WWE hasn’t done much with him, I could see them using him a lot more in the future. Elias is someone who could play both face and heel. It would be great to see him get a kickstart by defeating John Cena at the big show.
