Wrestlemania: WWE needs to stop relying on the past and start building towards the future
We are less than a month away until Wrestlemania 33 and rumors are now swirling about Wrestlemania 34’s main event. According to Dave Meltzer, he is hearing that the main event of Wrestlemania 34 will be Brock Lesnar defending the WWE Universal Title against Roman Reigns. He also indicated that this doesn’t specifically mean that either of these wrestlers are set to win at Wrestlemania 33. Also he said that since we are still a year away from Wrestlemania 34, plans could still change.
If WWE goes this route, I find it a slap in the face to the current roster. If Lesnar is the one to main event, it would be the sixth straight Wrestlemania where a part-timer would be the main event of the show. This began back at Wrestlemania 28 and Wrestlemania 29 where the Rock had the two main events against John Cena. This would continue to Wrestlemania 30, where Batista would be apart of the main event. Wrestlemania 31 saw Brock Lesnar and Wrestlemania 32 saw Triple H both main event the card. Also, reports have been coming out that Goldberg and Brock Lesnar are set to be the main event of Wrestlemania 33.
When you look at the current roster for both Smackdown Live and RAW, there happens to be a ton of wrestlers who if WWE pushed the right way, could be the main event level that WWE would not need to continue to rely on the past. On Smackdown you have wrestlers like AJ Styles, The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, and Bray Wyatt. On RAW you have wrestlers like Roman Reigns, Finn Balor, Seth Rollins, and Kevin Owens. If WWE pushed any of these guys the right way, then they wouldn’t need to rely on guys like Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, or the Rock to come back and main event Wrestlemania.
I also have a good hunch that if WWE has Roman Reigns be the main event again, it will get a ton of negative reactions. It should be noted that the Shield broke up in 2014, Roman Regins has been the main event of Wrestlemania 31,32, and possibly now 34. The reason for this is that WWE is trying to replace John Cena with Roman Regins being the top face of the company.
Personally, I truly hope that WWE doesn’t go this route and maybe gives one of the younger wrestlers like Finn Balor, Baron Corbin, or someone from NXT there Wrestlemania moment and not these part-timers.
