WWE: AJ Styles being the Number 1 contender for the US title is baffling
On the most recent episode of Smackdown Live, we saw a triple threat between AJ Styles, Sami Zayn, and Baron Corbin for the #1 contender spot for the US title. While it is pretty clear that Kevin Owens is going to retain the title at Payback against his former best friend Chris Jericho, we will be seeing his first feud on Smackdown be with AJ Styles.
I didn’t see Baron Corbin winning this match because I feel WWE has bigger plans and he failed to capture the IC title. As much as I hate it, I would have not minded seeing Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens feud for the US title. However, AJ Styles winning this triple threat match makes zero sense from a booking aspect. The feeling was AJ Styles would end up feuding with Randy Orton with the WWE title after he more than likely defeats Bray Wyatt at WWE Payback.
I don’t see how this feud with AJ Styles and Kevin Owens will work out. The only positive thing to come out of this triple threat match is that AJ Styles is now a true babyface. What I am curious to see is who gets into a program with Randy Orton. While there are a few possible ways that WWE can go is maybe have Sami Zayn feud with Randy Orton.
This match had bright moments from the spots, but the decision of having AJ Styles is something that I don’t understand why it happened. After the match I was raking my brain as to a possible reason for having AJ Styles win this match and I couldn’t come up with anything. Unless WWE has some magical plans for the feud, I can’t see this being successful. Don’t get me wrong, the in-ring work between Styles and Owens will be great, its just how WWE presents the storyline that I am curious to see play out.
