WWE: If booked correctly, AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura will be a classic
On Sunday night, Shinsuke Nakamura outlasted 29 other men to win the 2018 WWE Royal Rumble. As the tradition goes, the winner of the Royal Rumble gets to main event WrestleMania. This has been the case for most of the years. The most recent one when the Royal Rumble winner didn’t main event WrestleMania was last year with Randy Orton. I don’t suspect that to be the same with this years WrestleMania.
As Nakamura was celebrating the victory, Renee Young came into the ring and asked which belt he would like to face. For some reason, they had the option to whom they wanted to face. He would end saying that he wants to face AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. While the two have yet to face in a singles match in the WWE, they do have a history together. Back on January 4, 2016, New Japan Pro Wrestling was holding Wrestle kingdom 10. These two would fight for the IGWP IC belt. Two years later, it is still ranked among the best wrestling matches.
The bar is set very high for this match. If they allow these two to go the strong style route that they did at Wrestle Kingdom 10, then this will be one of the best main events ever. However, we have seen the WWE screw up moments on more than one occasion. The feeling is that Brock Lesnar will probably close out the show, but you can’t have Nakamura/Styles open the show. I’m all for opening a show with a title match, but make it the tag titles or U.S. Title.
When the WWE opens a show with the WWE title, I feel that it loses a little star power. Hence, the WWE Championship should be the “final act” of a pay-per-view. Vince McMahon has said that he wants to always top Wrestle Kingdom, well here is your shot.
