WWE: Smackdown Live has a new home in 2019

It seems that WWE’s Smackdown Live has found a new home starting next October. According to ESPN, Smackdown will begin to air their weekly show on FOX in October of 2019. It’s been talked about for some time now that NBC Universal, the parent company for USA Network, was not going to keep both RAW and Smackdown on their programming for the foreseeable future. While the feeling was that they were going to have a new deal with RAW, they were willing to let Smackdown find a new home.

Prior to finding a new home at FOX, it was reported that they were talking to other networks and platforms. It seemed that Facebook was on the platforms that were being talked about. It’s worth mentioning that this deal is worth a couple of billion and will be lasting for five years. However, the move will be bringing a few changes to the show. For starters, it will be airing on Friday nights instead of Tuesday nights. In addition, it may be going to a three-hour format. In addition, it will be airing on FOX instead of FS1 as the rumors made it seem to be.

I feel the move is great for FOX and WWE. For starters, FOX ended up losing the broadcasting rights of UFC to ESPN a few weeks back. A colleague of mine at WBLZ made a valid point that had me thinking. This could be FOX’s way of testing the water with the WWE. If you recall, there were rumblings that with the UFC’s contract soon to expire with FOX, they may have been looking to buy the WWE. Instead of going in all the way, they may feel the need to test it out to see how it does.
